Kyiv (Ukrainian pronounce), or Kiev (Russian pronounce) is the capital and largest city of Ukraine, located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River. The population in July 2013 was 2,847,200 (though higher estimated numbers have been cited in the press), making Kiev the 8th largest city in Europe. Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. 

The centre of Kiev (Independence Square and Khreschatyk Street) becomes a large outdoor party place at night during summer months, with thousands of people having a good time in nearby restaurants, clubs and outdoor cafes. The central streets are closed for auto traffic on weekends and holidays. Andriyivskyy Descent is one of the best known historic streets and a major tourist attraction in Kiev. The hill is the site of  the baroque-style St Andrew's Church; the monument to Yaroslav the Wise, the Grand Prince of Kiev and of Novgorod; and numerous other monuments.

Since the start of Ukraine's independence movement in 1990, Maidan Nezalezhnosti - Kiev`s central square - has been the traditional place for political rallies, including three large-scale radical protest campaigns: the 1989 student "Revolution on Granite", the 2004 Orange Revolution, and the 2013-2014 Euromaidan. Besides, the Maidan is a traditional point for several non-political events such as the city's Christmas Tree and the various festivities annually held on the Ukraine Independence Day and City Day.
